For Us By Us, Dressing for Co-op While Black - (Photography)

For Black Women across the world, there is an insurmountable pressure to be perfect. In a world that refuses to listen to them, and often overlooks them, it is here that we find they remain magical. As they journey through life, Black Women find solace in the spaces they create to engage with one another. At Northeastern University that space is called Sisters in Solidarity, also known as S.I.S for short. Over the past couple of years, this organization has made its imprint on campus as a space that embraces Black women unapologetically. Students find that they are heard, appreciated, and most importantly loved.

In my senior year at Northeastern University, S.I.S hosted a co-op fashion show as a way for the women on campus to share their experiences of dressing professionally while also highlighting their beautiful identities. This event served as a space where students were able to gaze upon the diverse and amazing cast of Black women that Northeastern University has been blessed with.

In collaboration with Sarah Elbakri, a Northeastern Alumni who is gifted at being an advocate for Black Muslim Women, we captured the stories of the models who participated in the event.

Models — Blair Childs-Biscoe, Adewunmi Oyetayo, Sarah Elbakri, Daija Spaulding, Ashley Townsend, Miranda Dias.
